ChatGPT store is now free - is it a SCAM!?

I made this video on my channel to talk about the big news from OpenAI.

They recently announced that GPTs are now free for all ChatGPT users. I wanted to explore what that actually looks like in practice and show you how to get the most out of them.

Keep reading below for the full summary and the link to the video on my channel.

Free GPTs

GPTs launched last November and they were originally only for Plus members.

Now anyone can access millions of GPTs created by the community.

Think of a GPT as a simple shortcut. You do not have to keep typing the same prompts over and over again.

It knows what kind of response you want every time you use it.

Custom Examples

I created a few custom ones to help with my daily life.

One is a Japanese Translator that provides direct translations and phonetics so I can learn how to pronounce words.

I also made one called Pixarify Your Photos.

It is a fun tool I use with my kids to turn their pictures into 3D Pixar style images automatically.

The Limits

The announcement sounds great, but there is a catch.

You cannot actually create images with the free version. If you try to use DALL-E or an image generator, it tells you to upgrade to Plus for twenty dollars a month.

I also reached my GPT-4o limit after just a few questions. It blocked me for over three hours.

It feels more like a free trial than a free tool.

Mobile Shortcuts

If you find a GPT you like, you can save it directly to your phone home screen.

Open the official ChatGPT app and find the GPT in your library. Use the iOS Shortcuts app to create an action that opens that specific URL.

You can even use a custom icon or a photo so it looks like a regular app on your screen for quick access.

Conclusion

GPTs are a powerful way to use AI as a shortcut for specific tasks like translating or summarizing. While it is cool that OpenAI opened this up to everyone, the strict limits on the free plan make it hard to use for a long time.

It feels like OpenAI is pushing these updates right before their big announcement with Apple. Even with the limits, these tools are worth exploring to see how they can fit into your routine.
